Description:
“She Soldier” is a piece that was completed in October 2008 and exhibited in 1708 Gallery (Richmond, Va) “Media X” exhibition. The inspiration of the piece stems from reading the stories of women soldiers who had been assaulted while serving in the armed forces overseas. The voices of survivors telling of their experiences are mixed with abstracted sounds that try to portray how the body feels in memory of an attack.
The uniform is an authentic army uniform worn by a woman in Iraq in 2002. She was selling it on Ebay for $10. I bought it and mounted small speakers throughout the body. Each body part speaks using a unique sound score.
